Expansion Award

MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced Charlotte as the league’s 30th franchise (later adjusted to 28th) in December 2019. The expansion fee was reported at $325 million, reflecting the growing value of MLS franchises and the attractiveness of the Charlotte market.

Building the Foundation

Charlotte FC History

The Expansion Process (2017-2019)

Early Efforts

Charlotte’s pursuit of an MLS franchise began in earnest in 2017 when Marcus Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports, led an initial bid. The effort gained momentum when Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper purchased the NFL franchise in 2018 and immediately expressed interest in bringing MLS to Charlotte.

The Tepper Effect

David Tepper’s involvement transformed Charlotte’s bid. His wealth, existing stadium infrastructure (Bank of America Stadium), and commitment to the region made Charlotte an attractive expansion candidate. In July 2019, Tepper officially submitted Charlotte’s expansion bid.

Expansion Announcement

On December 17, 2019, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced that Charlotte had been awarded the league’s 28th franchise. The team would begin play in 2022, giving the club two full years to build its organization before its inaugural season.

Expansion Fee: $325 million (at the time, the highest expansion fee in MLS history)

Building the Club (2020-2021)

Front Office Construction

September 2020: Zoran Krneta was hired as Sporting Director. Krneta brought extensive experience from European soccer, having worked with clubs in Serbia and Greece.

Staffing: The club hired technical staff, analytics personnel, and began building its scouting network. The front office was structured to emphasize data-driven player evaluation alongside traditional scouting.

Academy Development

Charlotte FC began developing its academy system, establishing youth teams at multiple age levels. The academy was designed to identify and develop talent from the Carolinas region, with the goal of eventually producing first-team players.

Brand Launch

July 2020: The club announced its name would be Charlotte Football Club (Charlotte FC), with the nickname “The Crown” referencing Charlotte’s status as the “Queen City” (named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III).

December 2020: The club unveiled its crest and colors (blue, black, silver, and white). The circular crest features a crown motif above the club name, with four diamonds representing the four wards of Charlotte’s historic Uptown district.

First Head Coach

July 2021: Charlotte FC hired Miguel Angel Ramirez as its inaugural head coach. Ramirez had gained attention for winning the Copa Sudamericana with Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle at age 36, making him the youngest coach to win a major CONMEBOL competition.

Charlotte FC Rivalries

Primary Rivalries

Atlanta United FC

The rivalry between Charlotte FC and Atlanta United FC represents the most significant and natural rivalry for the expansion franchise. Both cities are major metropolitan areas in the Southeast with competing sports interests and geographic proximity (approximately 245 miles apart).

Geographic Significance: - Interstate 85 corridor connecting the cities - Competing for regional soccer supremacy in the Southeast - Fanbase overlap in South Carolina and southern North Carolina - Similar expansion timelines (Atlanta joined MLS in 2017, Charlotte in 2022)

Historical Context: Atlanta United set a high bar for MLS expansion success, winning MLS Cup in their second season (2018) and establishing themselves as one of the league’s premier franchises. Charlotte FC entered MLS with Atlanta as the measuring stick for expansion success.

Key Matches: - April 10, 2022: First meeting between the clubs; Atlanta defeated Charlotte 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of over 67,000 fans - July 2022: Charlotte earned their first-ever point against Atlanta with a 1-1 draw at Bank of America Stadium - April 15, 2023: Charlotte FC defeated Atlanta United 1-0 at Bank of America Stadium, their first victory in the series, with Karol Swiderski scoring the winner - October 2023: Atlanta defeated Charlotte 4-3 in a high-scoring affair

Series Record (Through 2023): | Competition | Matches | Charlotte Wins | Atlanta Wins | Draws | |-------------|---------|----------------|--------------|-------| | MLS Regular Season | 6 | 2 | 2 | 2 | | Total | 6 | 2 | 2 | 2 |

The rivalry is still developing but has already produced passionate encounters with significant crowd support on both sides.

Developing Rivalries

D.C. United

As the closest MLS club to the north (approximately 400 miles), D.C. United represents a geographic rival for Charlotte FC.

Key Matches: - March 5, 2022: Charlotte’s inaugural MLS match was against D.C. United at Audi Field, a 3-0 loss - August 2022: Charlotte defeated D.C. United 3-0 at Bank of America Stadium - Multiple regular season meetings with competitive encounters

The rivalry benefits from the I-85 corridor connection and historical soccer tradition in both markets.

Nashville SC

Nashville SC represents another Southeast rival, though they compete in the Western Conference (as of 2023), limiting regular-season matchups.

Key Matches: - 2022: Series of competitive regular-season matches - U.S. Open Cup: Charlotte and Nashville have met in cup competitions

The proximity between Charlotte and Nashville (approximately 340 miles) and similar market sizes suggest this could develop into a significant rivalry if conference alignment changes.

Inter Miami CF

While not a geographic rival, Inter Miami CF has become a significant opponent due to the presence of international superstar Lionel Messi.

Key Matches: - Leagues Cup 2023: Charlotte FC faced Inter Miami in the Round of 32, losing 2-1 in Messi’s MLS debut tournament - Regular Season: Competitive matches with significant fan interest

The matchup draws significant attention whenever these teams meet, particularly for matches in Miami.

Conference Rivalries

New York Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls represent a competitive conference rival, with their playoff elimination of Charlotte FC in 2023 adding intensity to the matchup.

Key Matches: - October 25, 2023: New York Red Bulls defeated Charlotte FC 5-4 on penalties in the Wild Card Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, ending Charlotte’s first playoff appearance

This elimination match gives future regular-season encounters additional significance.

Philadelphia represents another Eastern Conference opponent with competitive matchups against Charlotte FC.

Key Matches: - May 2022: Charlotte defeated Philadelphia 4-0 at Bank of America Stadium, their most lopsided victory of the inaugural season

Charlotte FC has developed a competitive cup rivalry with Orlando City SC.
