Origin Story
The Arrogant Surgeon
Before becoming Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange was a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon. He was renowned for his surgical skills and amassed considerable wealth, but cared little for patients beyond the surgical challenge they presented.
The Accident
A car accident severely damaged the nerves in Strange’s hands, ending his surgical career. Desperate to restore his hands, he spent his fortune on experimental treatments and surgeries, all of which failed.
Journey to Kamar-Taj
Broke and desperate, Strange learned of the Ancient One, a mystical healer in the Himalayas (Kamar-Taj in the MCU). Traveling to Tibet/Netherlands (varies by version), he: - Initially sought only physical healing - Met the Ancient One and her disciple Karl Mordo - Discovered the existence of magic and other dimensions - Realized his own mystical potential - Chose to stay and study the mystic arts
